As the leaves fall and the binge watching begins, we often find ourselves inspired by the iconic cold weather fashion of the 90s, 2000s, and 2010s. With the seasonal urge to recreate the nostalgic looks from the shows we grew up loving, this is your ultimate fall style guide.
Pretty Little Liars
Pretty Little Liars is a must watch for autumn, with mystery, loss, and standout fashion woven through every episode. Each of the four girls had a distinct personality with an equally unique style, but two fashion icons stand out most.
Aria Montgomery was known for her unconventional taste in both men and fashion, often rocking an edgier style than the others. Her wardrobe blended punk rock elements with an artsy flare, and layering was central to her looks. Lace turtlenecks under long sleeves, graphic tees under mini dresses, sheer patterned tights, knee high socks, ankle boots, and leather jackets defined her style. Her palette leaned dark and jewel toned, paired with florals, plaids, and stripes. Finish the look with statement jewelry and her signature playful hair accessories.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Spencer Hastings, the sharply intelligent and preppy daughter of a state senator. She often wore crisp collared shirts layered under sweaters or blazers, paired with skirts or tailored trousers. She opted for neutral, nautical inspired colors, drawing from shades of navy, grey, cream, and taupe. Complete her look with a necktie, riding boots or oxfords, a classic trench coat, and minimal accessories like a thin headband or a dainty wristwatch
Charmed
This fall favorite takes us back to late 90s minimalism through the Halliwell sisters, the “Charmed Ones.” Their style was sleek, understated, and timeless with a hint of witchiness. Early seasons built their looks around basics like straight black slacks, white tees, camisoles, sheath dresses, knit turtlenecks, blue jeans, and clean blazers or leather jackets. High quality materials like suede, raw denim, and leather kept them warm and stylish as they fought demons in the autumn months. To recreate their essential 90s aesthetic, opt for a choker and a classic black boot.
Gossip Girl
Our iconic Gossip Girl duo, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, delivered some of the most memorable fall fashion moments on television.
Blair’s polished, Parisian inspired wardrobe featured structured silhouettes, feminine dresses, and chic outerwear such as pea coats, trench coats, and capes. Accessorizing was essential: statement headbands, fun tights, pumps, and elegant cold weather pieces like gloves and berets. Her schoolgirl palette used reds, pinks, and blues balanced by timeless neutrals. Plaid and argyle were staples in her everyday looks.
Glamorous yet effortlessly undone, Serena embodied a bohemian flair. To channel her fall style, layer a blazer or leather jacket over a slouchy cardigan and a simple tee. Pair with a relaxed skirt and tights or figure hugging blue jeans. Her palette leaned earthy, with cognac, maroon, camel, and grey, often accented with prep school plaids. Complete the look with tall riding boots, a loose neck scarf or tie, an oversized hobo bag, and of course, perfectly messy hair.
